Forestry students from all over the world visit the Slovenian Forestry Institute

Ljubljana, 23.3.2016

IFSA (International Forestry Students Association) students visited the Slovenian Forestry Institute and the Slovenia Forest Service as part of the IFSA Winter Meeting 2016 in Slovenia. They learned about Slovenian forestry and forest research, the hosting institutions and their current LIFE projects and participated in interesting workshops.

The event started with a brief overview from the event organizers (the LIFEGENMON team) and greetings from the representatives of the Slovenian Forestry Institute and Slovenian Forest Service. After that came the presentation of the EU LIFE Programme and interesting presentations of three LIFE projects that are currently in progress:

  • LIFE LIFEGENMON LIFE for European forest genetic monitoring system,
  • LIFE DINALPBEAR  – Population level management and conservation of brown bears in northern Dinaric Mountains and the Alps,
  • LIFE MANFOR CB.D – Managing forests for multiple purposes: carbon, biodiversity and socio-economic wellbeing projects.

LIFE Project Networking Day at SFI (IFSA WM 2016)

The presentations raised the students’ interested and they had many questions – some even had to remain unanswered because of the lack of time. After the coffee break the students went outside and participated in a Flow learning session. The sessions were very fun (see the event photos) and helped the students to concentrate for the upcoming workshops.

The afternoon part of the visit consisted of four workshops. The students visited the forest behind the Slovenian Forestry Institute, where they learned about the recreational role of urban forests and the research on ice break in Slovenia that happened in February 2014. They’ve also visited SFI’s laboratories, where they found out how genetic analysis of forest threes is done within the LIFEGENMON project. Their last stop was the portal establishing workshop, where the students participated in a moderated brainstorming session on what should be included in the upcoming LIFEGENMON portal.

The event ended on a positive note with lots of questions and busy small talk. A total of 12 presenters were happy to share their knowledge and experiences with some of the brightest forestry students from Central and South Eastern Europe and all over the world.
