Ljubljana, 22.4.2016

The 5th grade students from Šmartno primary school visited the Slovenian Forestry Institute on their natural science day to learn about forests, forest animals, forests and water, biological and genetic diversity and conduct experiments in the laboratory.

The natural science day started with flow learning warm up activities to allow the children to open their minds and concentrate during the learning workshops. During the warm up activities the children were split into groups and then played educational games such as forming forest animals as groups, hide and seek behind trees, forest cameras etc.

After the warm-up, the children were ready to learn in four different workshops. They’ve learned about forest animals and animal food chain, the growth cycle of a tree and the importance of biological and genetic diversity, forest water cycle and tree respiration and conducted experiments in the Institute’s laboratory. The LIFEGENMON team was represented by lecturers Dr. Urša Vilhar, Boris Rantaša and Natalija Senčar.

The children were attentive and lively and the impression was that they learned a lot about forests and the natural processes that take place there.
